The Grand Hotel is ideally situated
overlooking the fishing hamlet of Mgarr Harbour and the surrounding verdant
valley. The hotel enjoys panoramic views of Comino and Malta across the Gozo
channel. Viewed from above, the to and fro of the fishing boats and the
incomparable vistas add a romantic touch to the excellent hospitality offered at
the hotel. Guests often comment on how enjoyable these views are from the large
and private sun terraces found in most rooms.
Mgarr is known to most people as the gateway
to Gozo and it is a picturesque entry to the Island. The harbour is dominated by
a neo-gothic monument, the Lourdes Church, built in 1888. Left of the church is
Fort Chambray, designed by military engineer de Tigne' in 1723. But work only
started in 1749 at the personal expense of the Knight de Chambray, who was later
Commander of the Galleys and then Governor of Gozo. It was the last
fortification built by the Knights, and its only active service came during the
resistance to French occupation of the Islands in 1798. The plan had been to
build a town within its walls - a miniature version of Valletta. But this was
never carried out. Today though a modern `township' of deluxe apartments is
being built within the fortifications
The island of Gozo has become a haven for
holiday makers wishing "to get away from it all". The island offers peace and
tranquillity without sacrificing its entertainment potential. Apart from clean
beaches for summer enjoyment, there are shopping centres and numerous
discotheques, cinemas and a variety of exquisite restaurants. For those
interested in unforgettable cultural experiences, Gozo is a treasure trove of
prehistoric remains of international importance, museums and exhibitions.
Gozo and tiny Comino
provide a tranquil haven for a tempo and scene change.
The charm of Gozo is apparent the moment you arrive there. Greener, more rural
and smaller than Malta, life on Gozo moves at a leisurely pace. The rhythms
dictated by the seasons, fishing and agriculture.
In winter and spring, the Island is covered with flowering herbs and lush
crops. In summer, it’s awash with oleander, bougainvillea and geranium.
Gozo is steeped in myth. Thought to be the legendary Calypso’s isle of Homer’s
Odyssey, it’s a peaceful, mystical backwater. Baroque Churches and old stone
farmhouses dot the countryside.
Its rugged landscape and spectacular coastline await exploration. Choose from
rocky inlets to red sand beaches or sail, snorkel, dive and fish. Gozo has some
of the Mediterranean’s best dive sites
But there’s more. Gozo comes complete with historical sites, forts and amazing
panoramas. Plus one of the archipelago’s best-preserved prehistoric temples,
Ggantija Not to mention a nightlife and cultural calendar all its own, and some
great dining out.
