Location DescriptionMgarr Harbour and the surrounding verdant valley. Nearby panoramic views of Comino and Malta across the Gozo channel. Arriving in Gozo from Malta, your first close up view will be of Mgarr, where fishing boats and ferries lie in a harbor backed by flat-roofed houses on the hillside. Dominating the scene are the Churches of Our Lady of Lourdes, on the cliffs above the village, and neighboring Ghajnsielem. Modern Development continues apace and the fishing village now has a 4 and 5 star hotel which sits conspicuously on the cliffs. To the southwest lie the walls and bastions of Fort Chambray Mgarr is known to most people as the gateway to Gozo and it is a picturesque entry to the Island. The harbour is dominated by a neo-gothic monument, the Lourdes Church, built in 1888. Left of the church is Fort Chambray, designed by military engineer de Tigne' in 1723. But work only started in 1749 at the personal expense of the Knight de Chambray, who was later Commander of the Galleys and then Governor of Gozo. It was the last fortification built by the Knights, and its only active service came during the resistance to French occupation of the Islands in 1798. The plan had been to build a town within its walls - a miniature version of Valletta. But this was never carried out. Today though a modern `township' of deluxe apartments is being built within the fortifications Mgarr is 6Km east of Victoria. Bus 25 from Victoria. The size of Malta is about 27 km long by 14.5 km width, taking just over an hours drive between its two furthest points. After all its a small world isn't it? The Islands are only 93kms south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. Just a short distance away, considering that some of us drive further than this to go to work.
