About Malta Malta is a European island state in the south of the Mediterranean Sea and 90km from the island of Sicily. The Maltese archipelago is made up of four islands: Malta - the largest and most important - Gozo or Ghawdex, Comino or Kemmuna and two smaller islands Malta`s abrupt and rocky coastline is rugged but the relatively low altitude and Mediterranean climate make it the ideal place to enjoy the attractions of the sea. Its inhabitants are of mixed descent: Norman Arabs, Spanish, Sicilian and later English and the predominant religion is Catholicism. Apart from practically subsistence agriculture, the economy is based essentially on the activities of its port, tourism, and particular industries such as highly appreciated handcrafts like lace making. The official language is Maltese, an Arab dialect with Spanish, Italian and English influences written in Latin script. The territory of Malta is often described as one big open-air museum as the conservation of numerous historical remains makes it a unique group of islands. The island of Malta, in harmony with its rich past, is full of life and offers a wide range of entertainment. Take the chance to walk through the streets of Valletta, once the fortress of the Knights and now a World Heritage site. Explore the small villages bursting with life, popular celebrations and traditions that will take you back in time. |
