| Area description | | "Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city, and unusual in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture. Today Mdina has a quiet, restrained atmosphere in keeping with its noble past. Lamplit by night, Mdina transforms itself into the ‘Silent City’. For a relaxed evening, seek out the restaurants tucked away in its bastions and palace courtyards." Central Malta is dominated by Malta's old medieval capital, Mdina. Its cathedral dome and bastion walls are visible from almost everywhere in the region. Mdina is a near perfect example of a medieval walled town. Beyond the walls, lies Rabat, a large town of Roman origin. It houses fascinating grottos, monasteries and churches. St Paul is said to have stayed in a cave here in A.D.60. Both Mdina and Rabat are characterised by their timeless atmosphere and cultural and religious treasures. Beyond Rabat is Buskett, Malta's only large area of woodland, once hunting grounds of the Knights of St John. Central Malta is also known for its 'Three Villages' of Attard, Balzan and Lija. While town-sized, these old villages have a special charm with their beautiful palazzos and baroque parish churches. Another highlight in central Malta is the landmark of Mosta parish church with its huge, graceful dome. The rural area around Rabat and Siggiewi makes fine walking and touring country. Other good tours include the old British fortifications - the Victoria Lines - near Naxxar and Ghargur, where there are open views northwards to St Paul's Bay. | | | Travel Tips and Useful Malta Travel info | Find Useful Travel information about Malta, like Malta Visa requirements , weather statistics, driving around, banks and foreign exchange , electricity plugs or adaptors you may need etc.... | | | | Books About Malta | We have put together a good selection of books of Travel interest about Malta which we recommend to clients visiting or who have visited the Maltese Islands. | | Malta Map | Need to view a Map of Malta? | |
